WBC Title Fight: Golovkin vs Martirosyan

WBC Champion Gennady Golovkin (GGG) defends his middleweight titles on Saturday 5th May.

Gennady Golovkin was originally scheduled to face Saul Alvarez in a rematch of their September 2017 draw, but the Mexican’s two failed drug tests saw the fight postponed. Vanes Martirosyan was announced as the replacement on April 18, less than three weeks ahead of the bout.

If GGG wins, as expected, Jermall Charlo could be next on the cards. Charlo became the mandatory WBC challenger having stopped Hugo Centeno Jr in New York.

However, with Canelo’s suspension set to expire in September, a rematch between him and Golovkin could be a huge possibility.

Should Martirosyan cause an upset, he has an entire division to look forward to.

Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan

Martirosyan, who took on this fight with less than three weeks notice, has never been knocked out and his three losses have all come against quality opponents. Whilst he has not been in the ring for 32 months, he has a history of being able to take a punch and has recovered from knockdowns and gone on to win fights.

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (Kazakhstan)

Golovkin has gone the distance in his last two fights, against Daniel Jacobs and Alvarez. The undefeated holder of the WBC Belt was on a consecutive run of 35 stoppages in 36 fights until March 2017.

His record over the past six years has seen GGG become the unified middleweight champion and is one belt away from being the undisputed champ.
