After unifying the world lightweight championship, an exhausted Katie Taylor said to the Guardian:
“It was a very, very close fight,”
With Katie Taylor sporting Gold Cleto Reyes Gloves, the fight on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York was full of nonstop action. Both fighters bloodied and bruised from cuts and welts.
Katie Taylor (14-0, 6 KOs) achieved her long-held goal and victory when she took a majority decision over former WBC champion Delfine Persoon (43-2, 18 KOs) by going ahead by two points with advantages of 96-94.
The 10 rounds were very close and although some believed Persoon should have been victorious, Taylor returns to Ireland a champion after beating Persoons 5 year winning streak..
Taylor’s victory took the Olympic gold medallist to the pinnacle of the sport just 14 fights into her professional career.
Persoon held the WBC belt for nearly five years, and this match was billed as a bout between the two most talented fighters in the division.
Becoming the first Unified World Champion of the lightweight division, Taylor has the four most important titles in her power.
Joining two other Unified Champions Taylor moves up a level with Cecilia “The First Lady” Braekhus, at welterweight, and Claressa Shields at middleweight.
