What is ‘I AM DURN’ about?

Duran tells the story of his career from the very beginning. Starting with the roots of a poor boy whose father abandoned him at the age of five, Duran chose boxing to help him overcome the poverty he was born into. To help his mother and family who were in desperate need of money, Roberto Duran went out and shined shoes to earn instead of attending school.

The documentary covers how boxing allowed Duran to find his identity and self worth though his extraordinary accomplishments as an athlete. Alongside Durans upbringing and career, the political history of Panama is woven into and crucial his story. 

The transition of power from one General Omar Torrijos Herrera to General Emmanuel Noriega demonstrates social and political unrest in Panama and shows as Duran rose and fell, so did his beloved Panama. An impactful tale of how his country was brought to its knees as a pawn in violent regional and international politics and how Duran gave Panama a hero, a voice, an identity.

The cast is star studded with different perspectives on Duran’s historic fights with Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns, Davey Moore, and Iran Barkley. As well as commentary from boxing and promoter greats like Mike Tyson and Don King, the documentary hears the story from Duran’s wife and son.
